Discovery-News.com: New findings bolster the argument that dark energy is the reason our universe is expanding. James Williams explores the evidence. For more space news stories, check out dsc.discovery.com
In this National Science Foundation program, Sean Carroll, a senior research associate at the California Institute of Technology, sheds light into the “dark side” of the universe that may actually be the key to unlocking the mystery that is the universe. The type of matter we’re familiar with and encounter everyday – atoms and molecules – only makes up about 5 percent of the universe. The remaining 95 percent is believed to be dark matter and dark energy. Explore the history of dark energy and dark matter by following Einstein’s path to uncovering the theory that sparked a change in the world of astrophysics and the controversies behind that theory.

“And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.”
{Holy Quran 51:47}
the Quran which was revealed 1400years ago already mentions the Gradual expansion of the heavens

expanding on my last comment, there is no understood force (other than zero point energy, and even that has problems) that would push the objects in the universe apart. everything has gravity pulling it together, there is no outside vacuum in the universe, because the universe is everything. so if anything, you would think that the universe would be pulled together by its own gravity, not accelerating in its expansion.
[Reply]
first of all, a can is a horrible analogue for the universe. gas particles in a can have a well understood force (the electromagnetic force) pushing them apart. when a hole is poked in the can, effusion occurs and the pressure in the can caused by the electromagnetic force pushes the particles out. the universe on the other hand, is completely different.

i always pictured dark energy like this… the universe is a balloon (rough example) the air outside the balloon is the dark energy… effecting the density and motion of the balloon… to us inside the balloon… that air is an unseen force.
[Reply]
Outside of the universe, is outside of what we perceive and know as “reality”, its an endless see of nothing, that’s neither not there or there at the same time, it’s as far and wide as the eye cannot see, and it’ll make you crap a hypothetical massive boson. In fact, that you’re even “seeing” something that isn’t there begs to question exactly what and where you are at the time.
[Reply]
I’m not sure why I’m all over this particular video with comments, but I’d just like to say the “surprising” issue is that, when something expands it has to use energy, theoretically as it reaches its expansion limit, it should slow down in the rate of expansion as energy is used, instead we’ve got expansion accelerating, which either means expansion just started a few seconds ago (which is impossible, our universe is older than dirt. Literally.) or something is causing it to accelerate.
[Reply]
It’s very rough, but that’s only because we’re still in the dark regarding how our universe works, unknown variables only makes it more troubling, we can’t give it an elegant shape if we don’t know what we’re looking at.
I doubt we’ll need an “Einstein” or any renowned scientist, all humans have the thinking capacity to comprehend our surroundings, as best we can anyway…we just need to put in more time and effort in understanding what’s already right there in front of us.
[Reply]
Is it only me who thinks that the concept of Dark Energy is very non-elegant? I’m almost sure that the explanation of universe expansion can be done beautyfuly, but we will need Einstein ver 2.0
[Reply]
yes time exist! we all experience it, it is universal. your perception of the passage of time might depend upon the speed in which you travel.
[Reply]
“something”
[Reply]
Actually matrix you’re right, seconds CAN get faster and slower. Thats relativity, but it doesn’t matter because we don’t fast enough to notive relativistic effects
[Reply]
Meanwhile, dark mater is like “no you don’t, these are my galaxies.”
[Reply]
i agree

English will not allow you to translate certain formulas from ancient languages like Arabic because certain terms and answers do not exist in English. The language is too young not to mention it lacks the mathematical foundation to express that type of ancient wisdom.
Nevertheless only human beings and the things we create can address the questions you have. It just depends on what human beings on the planet you are asking the question to.
That is if you can communicate with them.

The answers that we have were borrowed from other cultures. All we did was test them with instruments like the telescope and timer to come up these answers (or confirm them).
If every branch of the human have come up with the same exact answer to the figures I gave you using the same instruments. This means it is right and exact.
If we truly want understand our Universe and time, you may have to study Arabic to gain access to their libraries filled with advance info on this topic.
[Reply]
It is through the telescope and the study of the movement of atoms that we come up with some of the calculations we are going over at this point.
The timing of these things comes from the ancient world. The answers were here long before me and you and for that matter America. Every factual formula we have comes from the Middle East. Even the word Algebra is a Arabic word .
[Reply]
Ah, very good point. But it brings me back to the point I made about how time is still a theory. So we’ve established what time is, but how do we know that we are calculating time correctly? How do we know that “seconds” are really traveling as fast as we say they are? Seconds could be going by faster or slower than what we think. Humans have applied what we conceive of as time. We said that there are so many seconds in a minute (etc. etc.) but how do we really know if we are right or not?
[Reply]
Time is motion and motion is time. Without movement you cannot have time which means there would be no life.
Motion is how we keep time by reading the movement of our sun counting the seconds, minutes and hours of our day.
The earth travels at a rate of 1037 and 1/3 miles per hour. Light travels at a rate of 186,000 miles per second. Every atom that gives off light must move to do so.
Motion is the key to all life. If you don’t move you lose.
[Reply]
“No thing can move faster than time” Ah…but what is time? Does time truly exist, or is it just something that we humans made up as another tool of measurement? “Time” can never really be explained. If we found a new, habitable world, the species on that world may perceive time differently than we do (if at all). “Time” is a theory, in my opinion.
[Reply]
you don’t understand a basic thing, universe in not expanding in the vacuum, the universe is full of it, the universe is creating new space when expands, get it?
[Reply]
Mathematically Breakthrough
It is now mathematically proven that the decelerating force that affected the Pioneer probes and the accelerating force that had caused many Fly-by anomalies:
1.) Both affect the Earth (and the planets) as well, – and with full force.
2.) Automaticallyequalize each other (when affecting the planets).
More science27. com > read the chapter: The Pioneer Anomaly.. Here are the key for understanding dark matter & dark energy as well…
[Reply]
Quite possibly the worst attempt at an analogy I have heard in my entire life.
[Reply]
I don’t think the expansion of the Universe should be that surprising. Think about if you have a can full of gas. Outside the can you have a vaccuum. You poke a hole in the can, what happens? The gas doesn’t collapse in on itself. It expands out into the vacuum. That’s pretty much what the universe is doing.
[Reply]
If u travel at da speed of light time doesen’t even affect u. Its nonexistent! I’ll get back 2 u on this subject of time later. But listen 2 what u said “energy had no purpose until 1 willed itself 2 manipulate n control it.” Knowledge/Intelligence is 1st before ALL! The entire Universe is Dark Energy that feeds the Black human being with Light, Life & Information! Peace!!! We’ll Build!!!!!!!
[Reply]
No thing can move faster than time because all material regardless of speed is based on time.
Dark Energy or the mysterious force does not represent intelligence because it is not an existence that communicates with the physical.
They (the atom and the force) are only synonymous in that we need that energy to exist. Thought does not come from energy but rather the atom who thought or willed itself to use that energy. Energy had no purpose until one willed itself to manipulate and control it.

why do they keep putting the most pretentious people out there to explain this stuff. i got to 2:29 before i had to turn it off.

The theory that seems to me to be closest to the truth is Dr. Judy Wood’s research.
[Reply]
@Gorepwn lol sadly no i think it is we that are retarted…it sucks but our brain was just not meant to comprehend the universe…its like being imprisoned. why cant we just naturally understand it

@mikilavush Correction of my comment below: …and that it orbits not the sun.
[Reply]
Science to the Middle Ages: It may appear that the earth is flat, but the truth is that it is round and orbits the sun, so the Bible is wrong.”
The Bible to the science: “It may appear that the universe is flat, but the truth is that it is round and surrounded by a layer of water, and the solar system is in its centre. Besides, God´s word never said that the earth is flat and that it orbits the sun. It was the Middle Ages that said it.”

Scientists estimate the end of the Universe to be 28 Billion light years away!! Beyond comprehention…

@a2dli
Appears to be expanding, it’s still beyond our understanding. The question I love, what exactly is it expanding into? And that’s only the visible universe, let alone the other 97% of it we can’t even see or explain.
[Reply]
Why does redshift mean the universe is expanding? can it not be that the matter between us and the places where the light comes from is causing it? kind of like when the sun sets the sky turns red because there is more between us and the sun. i mean our sun itself is redshifted, look at it. why doesnt it appear blue?

@Jacnas Dark energy, or Worse: Are Comments on YouTube Extremely Retarded?
[Reply]
@ 2.40, is that guy at the right of the screen, sleeping? LOL
[Reply]
@a2dli bad inferences, try to educate yourself on the matter, these are based on assumptions about the spectral red shift, the best evidence demonstrates that this is not attributable to recessional velocity. Intergalactic Doppler shifts are towards higher as well as lower frequencies. The universe is not expanding. There was no Big Bang.
[Reply]
@cusanusnicolas other experiments/observations have since confirmed that the universe is expanding. this is also consistent with einstein’s cosmological constant.
[Reply]
@a2dli common knowledge, but not true and not knowledge. most so called redshift is not owed to recessional velocity, this has been amply proved.
[Reply]
The universe IS expanding, this is common knowledge.
[Reply]
space-time is expanding at faster than the speed of light, thus the light horizon. not sure if thats where you were going but yeah, interesting nonetheless
[Reply]
The universe is NOT expanding, c is NOT constant between source and observer, most of the so called redshift is not of Doppler origin, and there is an ether (among other things). Nice try, though.
[Reply]
-this btw is related to what he says about hubble.
[Reply]
Why does it have to mean “the universe” is expanding. Cant it just mean that the galaxies are separating?’
Why suppose that space (which means the absence of ANYTINHG .i.e. it does not exist) itself expands? How could anyone come to THAT conclusion based on the evidence?
Think about that yall
[Reply]
So many dummies in here……….sounds like you all flunked science class in grade school………just listen to yourselves……..like a bunch of morons.

Very good, concise and entertaining presentation.
Thanks for uploading.
[Reply]
I find it difficult to understand why the universe is expanding because galaxies are moving further apart. It’s a bit like saying the ocean is expanding because two ships move further away from each other. I think the universe both infintely massive & infinitely miniscule compared to us as a reference point.
[Reply]
the universe is retarded
[Reply]
Thanks for the link, I will enjoy watching that when I get a spare hour (not sarcasm!). But just I’ll just assume what he is saying for a moment. ‘Flat’ is a particular way of talking about all 3 space dimensions. It doesn’t mean the universe looks like tea tray. As I understand it, there still isn’t a middle or any edges to the universe in our normal 3 dimensions. And spacetime is still curved (whatever that means).
[Reply]
@chrisofnottingham : Lawrence Krauss says that we now know unambiguously that the universe is flat. See his AAI lecture at watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo
