The Wonder and Beauty of Teaching Physics

March 7, 2011 by

Walter Lewin, professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, sheds light on everyday phenomena such as rainbows and what makes the sky blue. Watch Lewin create a rainbow right in the lecture hall and other exciting demonstrations in this engaging and creative discussion of physics that sheds what lies beneath the everyday wonders of our world.

Paul Hewitt demos and answers the question. Which will hit the ground first … a dropped ball or a ball thrown horizontally.

I had my 13 year old daughter watch this. She came away with a smile and a lot of new information to research for her science project about rainbows. Plus.. it was just a fun lecture class intro. LOVED it!

go live in a cave without any technology. One thing is that you don’t like it, and that would be your personal opinion… But there is smart people with understanding of physics and maths that have made your life as comfortable as it is today, so sitting on your computer (made by who?) calling it rubbish is…rubbish…

This video’s over an hour? Of what? Useless Psychics.. gee golly wiz.. sorry but I don’t have time to waste on such rubbish.

    Math is fucking gay.

@MyVoicenotSilenced The ingredients? this is not a soup recipe, I’m not telling you that god doesn’t exists, but what I’m trying to say is that is he really exists he is not useful, science has excluded god’s participation on any sense so why do you have to use it to explain things that you don’t understand?

@MrRustytrain The big Bang is a theory and where did the ingredients come from? I know God exists.

  9. MrRustytrain says:

@MyVoicenotSilenced Everything on this world and even stars, galaxies and space has a explanation all they came from the Big Bang and this one came from the natural interaction of physical laws…

My point is if you don’t know the answer that doesn’t mean that such question can only be answered with god, if you’re ignorant and want to see realy how stuff works without the need of a god, please google your questions.

Wow, I didn’t know this video was about god. I wish everybody would just shut the fuck up about god.

@AudioBookBoy12 Are you so deluded that you believe that statement? I mean…define ‘we all’ in your eyes. If you mean ‘we all’ to mean: All of us from Southern America, then sure I’ll give you that. But that’s about it.

  12. AudioBookBoy12 says:

@SonOfOuranos I am reporting you. We all know God is real. Just because you are in denial of that fact doesn’t exist, you don’t gotta get mad at other people

Your knowledge adds, your knowledge does not subtract. Feynman quote about the flower and the scientist versus the artist, if you didn’t pick up on it. I’m sure he meant it that way. You can look it up. Good fun lecture. Thanks.

@MyVoicenotSilenced Fuck off with the I KNOW bullshit, YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING AT ALL, NOTHING. Just curl up in a corner and pray to your god that he doesn’t strike you down for being a waste of human skin!

  15. MyVoicenotSilenced says:

@SonOfOuranos I know he is real and I have real evidence but I suspect you wouldn’t believe me. A lot of people don’t want to believe; it is easier not to believe that way nobody is accountable and nobody is the boss. But God is the boss and it’s his world and we are only visitors on it. Life is a miracle. Nothing man can make compares to life. No painting of a sunset can ever be as beautiful as a real sunset, not even a computer animated sunset can compare to the real thing.

  16. SonOfOuranos says:

@MyVoicenotSilenced You say you know God is real. No you don’t. You believe he is real, but you don’t know it and that’s part of the point. When you speak in absolutes you cannot be taken seriously.

Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize winner for quantum electrodynamics, said, “Why nature is mathematical is a mystery…The fact that there are rules at all is a kind of miracle.”

  18. MyVoicenotSilenced says:

People say prove it, prove it. I don’t have to prove God exists. How did all the ingredients in the world come to be? Did they just appear? My claims in believing in God are made with my own personal experiences; I know he is real. There is so much science can not explain and there is so much science can not create. Understanding a rainbow doesn’t explain where the stars came from, where the sun came from and why Earth is as beautiful as it is.

  19. MyVoicenotSilenced says:

    @binkasaurus I don’t have to prove anything.

    [Reply]

  20. binkasaurus says:

@MyVoicenotSilenced Prove it. Claims made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence, therefore we can dismiss your hypothesis of god

    Dotted line!! Answered:
I was so curious about how Prof Walter Lewin made those dotted lines. One answer i found convincing was that he had a special chalk holder. I could not find a chalk holder with such capabilities on the market but since he works at MIT I was cure that some one over the years could have made one. After some time I finally found some one who knew the answer and I just confirmed it. Hold the chalk at an abuse angle from board and push the chalk so that it skids along.

I like how the professor describes rainbows but God made all the ingredients to make rainbows possible.

Naruto: The reason is because the components of the motion of an object (that is, the different directions an object travels in) subject to gravity alone are independent of one another. Thus, the time it takes for both balls to travel in the downward direction is the same, even though the motion of the ball that was shot contains an added direction, say, across the table.

  26. tubestick00 says:

gravity acts on it just the same. one happens to be flying away at high speed and ends up hundreds of yards away, but they both drop toward the earth at the same rate. in theory. it works in practice too, but there are obviously variables involved in the practical version that stop it being exactly the same time every time. they did it on that show mythbusters.

I think most people should take conceptual physics before you apply mathematics to it (at least for the most part). That way you understand that physics is fun before you know that it’s tedious.
