From HubbleCast. For centuries, scientists imagined objects so heavy and dense that their gravity might be strong enough to pull anything in, including light. They would be, quite literally, a black hole in space. But it’s only in the past few decades that astronomers have conclusively proved their existence. Today, Hubble lets scientists measure the effects of black holes, make images of their surroundings and glean fascinating insights into the evolution of our cosmos. In science fiction, black holes are often portrayed as some kind of menacing threat to the safety of the whole Universe, like giant vacuum cleaners that somehow suck up all of existence. Now, in this episode, we’re going to separate the fiction from the facts and we’re going to look at the real science behind black holes and how Hubble has contributed to it. Black holes come in different sizes. We’ve had solid evidence for the smaller ones since the 1970s. These form when a huge star explodes at the end of its life. As the outer layers are blown away, the star’s core collapses in on itself forming an incredibly dense ball. For instance, a black hole with the same mass as the Sun would have a radius of only a few kilometers. Before Hubble was launched, astronomers had noticed that the centers of many galaxies were somehow much denser and brighter than they were expected to be. And so they speculated that there must be some kind of huge, massive objects lurking in the centers of these galaxies in order to

you’ll be ripped apart and boiled off even before you see the black hole, so getting inside is not possible.

Also, does anyone know what the general consensus is in regards to the fate of the universe; will gravity dissipate resulting in a universe that is constantly expanding, or will gravity persist, sucking everything back into where it started?

I’ve been wondering about the theory of a super massive black hole at the center of every galaxy; I haven’t found any explanations, I’m sure they’re out there though. I was thinking maybe after the big bang, matter started condensing into extraordinarily large stars. Is it possible that in the beginning there were only these few hundred billion stars, which then collapsed in on themselves creating these super massive black holes we’re detecting at the center of each galaxy?

@poorinreign No its not what I was doing. I speak not just for myself but for everyone who came to this video to learn about the universe, not about religion and why Im dumb/blind for believing it. His remarks were demeaning and condescending because they were unrelated to the video. But at least I can say GINNERMAN123 has the decency and humility to admit his post was unneccesary.

@Daxcheese Thank you minister of peace. Isn’t that what you’re doing right now? Leave the kid alone and tend to your own business. His remarks are only as serious as you make them out to be.

  36. GINNERMAN123 says:

@Daxcheese I agree, it was more aimed satirically at all the religious folk attacking science.. good point tho, I didnt intend for my message to be at the top

    [Reply]

  37. Daxcheese says:

@GINNERMAN123 Science is not based on or related to a hatred of religions. One can be scientific and religious at the same time. Please do not bring conflict into a video that is meant to be constructive. Why cant we just bask at the glory of the Universe without having to bring out our own unrelated personal issues with the world?

@MoonSpotRoXX yes, its mass is measured, but I cant remember exactly how. I think it has something to do with the light it displaces and the measurement of light and radio waves.
Also, SMBHs effect things on a galactic scale. We are being pulled into the center of the Milky Way and there are several other galaxies being collectively pulled together, including Andromeda into our own. There are about 5 or 6 galaxies in our group orbiting a gravitational center which will eventually be one big one

    [Reply]

  40. MoonSpotRoXX says:

So a super massive blackhole only really affects the space around it, Which I assume is the “bulge” in the milkyway. What about the cumulative gavity of the bluge(in a gravimetric chain), with the SNBH being the strongest link and the uttermost centre of this gravity field. As both the bluge and the SMBH lay in the same dirrection from us; my question is:

Can the effects of both the SMBH and the sympathtic gravity waves of the bulge be messured? What FUTURE effects could it have on our system?

@KageOfSand Excuse my sweeping comment Kage.. Of course I recognise religion is important to many people, I am not against it, I have read parts of the bible, the lessons it promotes are brilliant. It was more aimed at those on this page that refute science as opinion when their own Faith is based much less in material fact.. A lot of tension is caused through religion, so while at the personal level I agree it is important, at larger scales religion does seem to cause tension unfortunately.
