Real Word Problems From My Physics Book – PH17

The concept behind this: this word problem would look absolutely ridiculous if it was reenacted in real life. Mission accomplished. This is an actual homework problem from my Physics book. Special thanks to Olivia in my Physics class for pointing out how stupid this world problem actually is. Music by Count Basie and the Mills Brothers – “Gentle on My Mind.”

I once had a question on Doppler Shifts, where you compared the frequency of a train’s whistle by standing directly behind and in front of the train. Of course, standing directly in front of the train results in death and therefore no frequency is observed.

Does anyone else remember the spoof Q&A that ‘went around the world’ in the seventies and asked, “given an accurate barometer, how would you find out the height of your apartment block”? Among the many hilarious answers were: “use the barometer to bribe the janitor to measure it” and “drop the barometer from the top and time the fall”.
Certain physics teachers should be shot on sight, and I say that as a physicist. No wonder the subject is in decline in the West.

I had a physics problem that went “Say you’re an intergalactic space traveler trying to watch your weight. If you weigh 158 lbs on Earth, how much would you weigh on Mars?”
